What Can You Do Prevent It? Confident Apparatus Maintenance!
7 Basic Guidelines for Weekly Vehicle Inspections, of all Emergency Vehicles… Fire Trucks, Ambulances, Squads, etc.
Tires – Most standards use either 2/32” or 4/32” to gauge their tread depth on commercial vehicles. PA DOT requires 2/32 for “drive” tires and 4/32 for “steering” tires. Inspect the tires for tread depth with a tire tread depth gauge, check tire pressure readings, and visually inspect tires for improper / uneven wear and keep a record of findings. The inner rear tires are the most overlooked, because of access, but should not be neglected!
Brakes – A critical component that requires specific attention. Utilize the CDL brake test for air brake systems to test the parking brake, emergency brakes, air pressure gauges, lights, warnings, and for any leaks that may be occurring. For LD hydraulic brake systems, inspect fluid levels, parking brake, pad thickness, and any signs of leaks.
Vision Related – Vehicle readiness must be maintained, ensuring that all mirrors and glass are clean with no water spots, scratches, or cracks. Inspect wiper blades and ensure they are working properly and allow a clear view for all routine movements. Defroster fans & vents should be tested. (You can’t avoid what you can’t see).
Lighting – Assure that all lights (DOT & Emergency) are functioning. Check every bulb or LED light to confirm that it is illuminating. Interior lighting is just as important and should be inspected as well.
Miscellaneous Equipment – Ensure that all equipment, books, computers, portable radios, medical bags, etc., are secured and cannot affect the drivability of vehicle, including any obstruction of controls.
Changes in Drivability – Any changes, drifting, pulling, noises, clinks, clanks, or knocks need to be documented and investigated promptly.
Towed Equipment – Many departments have trailered equipment that should be inspected as well. Inspect lights, brakes, tires, and axles. Secure all items on trailer, and inspect all hitch mechanisms on both trailer and tow vehicle.
