In November of 1987, my wife Susan and I, David Glick, decided to take a risk and turn our living room into an office to start our own fire apparatus dealership. Over the next three years, with my knowledge and experience in the fire service and with Sue’s patience and financial management, the business expanded into the basement, the hallway, and even the dining room. Near the end of 1990, the company had grown so large that we had to find a new location. A two-story office was constructed with a two-bay service facility near the west end of Smoketown Airport. Our first mobile service truck was operational within the first year at our new location. In the years to follow, we expanded the location again by acquiring two additional service bays and a separate parts department.
With steady growth in the first twelve years, we decided to partner with Pierce to continue our dedication to providing the best equipment and the best service in the industry. Meanwhile, we had grown so large that we needed to build a new facility to accommodate our customers, and found land once again at the airport – this time at the eastern side. The Bird In Hand facility opened in October of 1999, and currently offers nine service bays, a full time fabrication area, large parts warehouse and attached offices. We had sales representatives located throughout central and eastern Pennsylvania to make sure our customers receive the prompt service and attention they deserve.
Towards the end of 2001, Pierce approached us with another opportunity to grow, this time in western Pennsylvania. We quickly added 22 counties to our coverage territory, hired the Pierce sales representatives already in those areas, and leased a second service and parts location in Cranberry Township. We soon outgrew this location, so we expanded our western office to a new and permanent facility in Zelienople, Pa, in November of 2005.
In 2007, we were presented with the opportunity to expand our product line to include ambulances. In sales and service, we cover the entire state of Pennsylvania for Demers Ambulances, and the eastern half of Pennsylvania for Braun Industries. We are excited by the opportunities given to us to grow and expand our services and products.
In 2015, Pierce approached us with yet another opportunity for growth: to expand our sales and service territory throughout the entire state of Pennsylvania. We readily accepted and quickly worked to establish a relationship with the fire departments in our new territories. As a result, we opened our Mill Hall service and parts facility in 2017.
Another major change for Glick Fire in 2015 was the formation of our paint and body repair shop at our Bird In Hand facility. For years we had observed the need for a dedicated paint and body repair facility. With much planning, we were able to open our own shop and can now offer our customers in-house body repairs, custom paint matching and more.
In 1987, we started out small as a family-owned and operated business in Dave and Sue’s living room. We are thankful and proud to now be a 2nd generation family-owned and operated business that employs more than 75 customer service, sales, parts and administrative personnel.
